Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941), was a Bengali poet, writer, music composer and painter. He reshaped West Bengal’s cultural, art, literary and musical environment. One of the most prolific and versatile litterateur of his times he was called Gurudev with reverence.

Gitanjali a collection of very touching, fresh and beautifully composed poems won him the Nobel prize in Literature making him the first Indian and Non European to do so. His other notable works include Manasi, Sonar Tori (“Golden Boat”), Balaka (“Wild Geese” — the title being a metaphor for migrating souls)

His poetry, influenced by the lineage of Bhakti saints of the 15th and 16th century as well as the Indian mythology and Upanishads. It manifests simplicity, emotions, ecstasy, adventure, mischief, happiness and sorrow. his poems brought alive images of rural Bengal, folklore, art and culture.
